Flint Police Officer Maria Reed

Episode 22 welcomes officer Maria Reed from the Flint, Michigan, Police Department who, in addition to being featured in the 2018 Netflix docuseries Flint Town, made Flint history with her son Dion in 2016 becoming the first mother–son duo to join the department.

She also focuses on two violent incidents that had a profound impact on her life: a traumatic encounter with a stalker that nearly derailed her dream of becoming a law enforcement officer, and a 2021 attempted robbery call that turned into the most challenging and dangerous response of her career.

Maria Reed has been an officer with the Flint, Michigan, Police Department for six years.

Reed and her son Dion both applied to the police academy in 2016 and went through all 16 weeks of training together. Upon graduation from the academy, Maria and Dion made Flint history as the first mother–son duo to join the Flint Police Department.

In 2018, Reed appeared in five episodes of the Netflix series Flint Town which chronicled the police department in Flint as it struggled with dwindling resources and crumbling infrastructure in a community crippled by violence and a contaminated water crisis.

In addition, Reed is an instructor for Mott College Law Enforcement Regional Training Academy (LERTA), serves as a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer and trainer, and is a part of the Genesee County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).

Prior to becoming a law enforcement officer, Reed worked in the EMS field for 11 years.
